Palestine Police Lieutenant Jeffrey Powell Skips Lunch; McDonald’s Stock Drops on News
PALESTINE-Police Lieutenant Jeffrey Powell mentioned to a friend that he was skipping lunch on Thursday, opting instead to spend some time watching television.
“I don’t know, I was hungry, but decided not to eat,” Powell said, adding “it was a surprise to me, too!” Powell said he enjoyed an episode of the Andy Griffith Show during his lunch hour.
Powell assured reporters that he will eat lunch tomorrow, describing Thursday’s decision as “extremely rare.”
McDonald’s (MCD) shares fell sharply on the news, but they’re expected to recover should Powell resume his normal eating habits.
McDonald’s CEO Donald Thompson said there was some concern, but Thursday’s events were very rare. “He [Powell] has skipped an occasional meal, which does disrupt the fast food sector, however, history has shown we will quickly rebound when he returns to his regular diet,” Thompson explained. Reports of the company entering bankruptcy over the missed lunch were widespread Thursday evening and Thompson admitted that the idea of bankruptcy did get discussed. “There was a level of panic,” he said, “but I think we’re past that now.”
