PALESTINE-After the apparent termination of Palestine Police Chief Robert Herbert on Monday night, an excited City Manager Wendy Ellis and Mayor Therrell Thomas, at a press conference Tuesday, introduced a new chief to be considered at a meeting of the city council on June 23.
Obertray Erberthay said he’s excited about the new opportunity to help heal the Palestine Police Department.
“I’m really looking forward you know, to doing this job, but it’ll be a hard one, I know. Friends ask me, ‘Robert, I mean, Obertray, are you sure this is what you want to do,'” Obertray said to reporters present covering the press conference.
Understandably, officers were skeptical if such a sudden choice should be made after the hectic last few weeks.
“I don’t know, there’s just something about him, but I can’t put my finger on it,” an officer who wished to remain anonymous said.
Ellis assured officers that this new chief, while signaling using air quotes when saying “new” will be the solution to the department’s problems.
Erberthay said he has worn a mask most of his life and said that no one in the community or the department will ever see him unmasked.
“I’m not a superhero, so let’s be clear,” Erberthay said, “But I’m as close as it gets so get ready Palestine!”
