PALESTINE, TX–One of the three candidates for mayor of Palestine, Michael Sims, sat down for a one-on-one interview with TDT to go over his qualifications and reasons for seeking the office.
Sims first asked us a question, “Who am I and why am I here?” We thought he was playing off Admiral James Stockdale’s famous opening line in the 1992 Vice Presidential debate. Stockdale was the running mate in Ross Perot’s independent bid to become President of the United States. But, Sims said, “No, seriously, who am I and why am I here?”
After noticing a strange look in his eyes, TDT queried him on whether he drank city tap water. He said he drank it every day and indicated he was having a hard time focusing on our questions. Finally, the light came on in his head and he stated, “Oh yeah, my name is Michael Sims and I’m the Forrest Gump candidate, I put my name on the ballot because I just felt like running.”
Sims says he is concerned not only for his own health, but also for the health, safety and welfare of others in the city, “When it comes to government, I am not a smart man,” he said, “but I know what quality water is, Jenny!” TDT can’t disagree with that comment, except no one named Jenny was present for the interview.
Sims says he suspects part of his problem is the so-called flouride in the water. He placed his hands on his hips and declared, “I don’t think it’s flouride at all, I think it’s a Steve Presley Kool-aid mix.” Sims reminded TDT that it was Presley who was adamant that the chemical stay in the local water supply. Sims said he used to be clear and confident in his thoughts, but after drinking the city water for years, a voice in his head keeps saying there might be an issue, “How else can you explain the strange behavior of the folks in this town,” Sims asked before rambling on incoherently for several minutes. Finally he blurted out, “I just hope I live long enough to know the truth, I know something is wrong, I just want answers.”
TDT will publish an interview with the third and final candidate, Theresa Hamilton-Roberts, in the coming days.
